a piece of life advice

What started out as a post on a piece of life advice, gradually turned into overall thanks to those who have done this, who impress me every day with their drive and passion. My advice is simple in theory, but is difficult to put into practice. We are all busy with so many things: work, families, social lives; but if you aren’t happy: do something about it.

That being said, what I mostly mean is your career, your work life, the majority of what we all spend our time doing. (Relationships and personal lives, that’s a whole ‘nother ballgame). Find a new job, take classes, start a business doing something you love. Like I said, it sounds simple, but I KNOW it’s hard.

There are things you can do on the small scale to make your life a bit better. A new job might not be the most practical or easiest solution, but maybe taking on a new responsibility at work, moving offices, arranging to work remotely one day a week–actively making a change.

In the larger sense, find your passion and follow it. I am so thankful to have amazing friends who have paved the way and are actually going after what they want:

Devin decided to follow her passion for fitness and exercise and just completed her first year of physical therapy school.

Kim didn’t want to be tied to her desk and is now a digital nomad living in Vietnam and traveling the world.

Whitney picked up and lived in London for a year and in the Fall will start pursuing her MFA to hone her writing skills (she’s already an amazing writer).

Maureen is at one of the top business schools in the country and will probably be President one day; I’m calling it.

Cainon is working in Africa for the summer and then going to business school at MIT in the Fall.

Laura is going to start writing a book she has been thinking about for a long time, and that’s been in the works since we met in 2000.

I am so incredibly proud of these awesome people in my life. It ain’t easy; I’ve seen how hard they’ve worked. Now it’s my turn to follow in their footsteps. And like I’ve said before, I couldn’t be more excited about actively making a change for the better by going back to school and changing things up. It’s simple to dream about doing something and begin to plan for it, but actually putting those changes into practice is quite the feat.

Do something about it. Go out and get what you want. It’s never too late.

What’s one piece of advice you have for others? What do you really want out of life?
